JAAA National Senior Champs: Thompson, Blake Win 100m
DOUBLE Olympic sprint champion Elaine Thompson and 2011 World 100 metres champion, Yohan Blake, were in sizzling form at the JAAA National Senior Championships tonight.
Thompson clocked an impressive world leading 10.71 seconds to win the women’s 100m title, just missing her personal best by one-hundredth of a second. Veteran Simone Facey placed second in 11.04 while Jura Levy was third in 11.06.
“It feels great to compete here at home,” Thompson said. “I just came to run the rounds and I am really satisfied,” she added.
Blake continued his comeback this season with another fine victory at the National Stadium. He outclassed the field to win the men’s 100m in a season’s best 9.90, the second fastest time in the world this year. Julian Forte was second in 10.04 and Senoj Jay Givans, third in 10.05.
Former National champion Asafa Powell failed to face the starter due to injury while Odean Skeen pulled up during the race.
“First I must thank God and the people around me, including my coach, for the positive change in my life. I must also thank Usain Bolt who has given me a lot of encouragement in training. I am happy to know that I am returning to good form before the World Championships and I just want to remain healthy,” said Blake who added that he feared no one this year.
